The Violet R. & Nada V.

Bohnett Memorial Foundation

In 1968, F. Newell Bohnett founded The Violet R. Bohnett Foundation in memory of his mother who passed away that year. Newell Bohnett desired, through this Foundation, to further his mother's heritage of the loving of her family and community. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and dynamic volunteer in the Santa Barbara, California community where she lived.

In 1992, Nada V. Bohnett, the founder's wife of 46 years, passed away and was added to the name of the Foundation. (The full name of the Foundation is "The Violet R. and Nada V. Bohnett Memorial Foundation.") Nada, whose name means "hope," faithfully shared the hope she had found through her faith in Jesus Christ to many people throughout her lifetime. She also made a lasting impact upon her husband, children, grandchildren and the Hawaiian island community where she spent the last 24 years of her life.

These two women were active in their communities but also anchored in their families. So it is fitting that the Foundation that has been established in their names would be about "championing community servants and fostering family legacies."

Since 1990, Jamie Bohnett, Newell's son, has been directing the Foundation.  In 2010 Jamie and his wife, Cindy, began co-directing the foundation, with two simple emphases. Jamie explains:

"Championing Community Leaders"

Cindy and I are following a call to support community leaders - pastors and their wives, staff and volunteers of non-profits, and various lay leaders. As we move into the empty nest and grandparenting season we believe we are entering a new era of ministry as well. We are convinced that a lifetime of impact upon others for Christ depends upon sustaining ones’ own vibrant relationship with Christ. This is much easier said than done, especially in our culture that is driven by accelerating speed, transiency and commitment to "the bottom line." We believe that encouraging leaders in the practice of spiritual disciplines in a safe community of transformation is the most important way that we can support leaders and those they serve.

"Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you."  (Psalm 51:12-13)

"Fostering Family Legacies"

Cindy and I understand the challenges of dealing with a variety of family life issues and dynamics. We believe that the most important people God has placed in our lives to live out the gospel with are our own family members. We desire to provide a safe place for parents and grandparents to be supported as they work through the normal challenges of building a family legacy.

"The LORD will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring. Some of you will rebuild the deserted ruins of your cities. Then you will be known as a rebuilder of walls and a restorer of homes." (Isaiah 58:11-12)
